Locate a place in your essay where you want to reference a source and set your cursor next to the last word of the quoted text. This will prepare your document to add an in-text source. You need not worry about differentiating the type of source you want to cite; the steps are similar across different source formats, from books to magazines. Microsoft Word will automatically differentiate between formats, depending on what you select as the type of source, in the later steps.
Click the "References" menu at the top of your Microsoft Word program. Locate the section called "Citations and Bibliography." Change the formatting style to the format you need for the paper by clicking on the dropdown menu and selecting the appropriate format for your purposes.
Click "Insert Citation," found in the same section titled, "Citations and Bibliography," under the "References" menu. Click "Add New Source" to add a citation. A pop-up window will appear, and under "Type of Source," click the dropdown menu to select either "Book," "Journal Article," "Report," or "Magazine Article." To the right of this field, you will see a dropdown menu which gives you the option to change the language, if the source is in a foreign language. This field is set to English by default.
Fill in the source information, such as the author, title, year, city published, and edition. At this point, the information collected is still similar across different types of sources, whether it's a book, paper or magazine. Microsoft Word will automatically transform it to the correct format for a particular type of work, as well as to the proper document style, once the program adds the new source on the page.
Skip to the end of your document to add a bibliography page. Click "References" menu, then locate the section "Citations & Bibliography," then click "Bibliography." Select the format of the bibliography that you want to add to your document. The resulting list that will be added to your document. This list contains all of the in-text sources you've added previously, properly following the format for the bibliography page, depending on the document style you selected in the beginning.
