Colleges in Wayne County, Michigan

Wayne County is home to Detroit, Michigan, some of the nation's largest automakers and an eclectic artistic scene. Equally impressive is the array of secondary education available within county lines. Wayne County boasts five four-year universities and three community colleges.

These schools are spread over the county, stretching from inner city Detroit to the northern suburbs with 13 campuses overall.
  1. Wayne State University

    • With its high level of enrollment and inner city Detroit location Wayne State University is at the center of the county's educational sector. WSU includes both graduate and undergraduate programs and offers access to the schools of law, business and education. For the artistically inclined, the school of theater is a stalwart in the Michigan arts scene. Among the highlights are monthly performances at the Hillberry Theatre. Hillberry is one of the few graduate repertory companies in the nation and has produced alumni such as Tim Meadows and Lily Tomlin.

    University of Michigan-Dearborn

    • The University of Michigan-Dearborn shares faculty with its parent university in Ann Arbor at a fraction of the price. Located in Dearborn, the university takes full advantage of its proximity to Ford Motor Co. with an array of internships and graduate programs that work with the company's engineering department. Although primarily a commuter school, U of M-Dearborn expects student dormitories to open in fall 2012.

    University of Detroit Mercy

    • University of Detroit Mercy is a private Catholic institution with three Detroit locations. The primary campus is located on the city's west side with satellite campuses in the Renaissance Center and in Cork Town. The University of Detroit Mercy offers an educational program with special tracts dedicated to special education and childhood development.

    Other Universities

    • The Center for Creative Studies focuses on film, graphic design and photography. Several Detroit luminaries, including painter and sculptor Tyree Guyton, are on the faculty.

      Madonna University. Founded by the Jesuit Sect, Madonna was once an all-girls school but started admitting males in 2004. It is located in Livonia.

      Marygrove College was founded by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart and places a focus on community activities.

      Baker College has online courses and 15 branches throughout Michigan, including one in Allen Park.

    Community Colleges

    • Henry Ford Community College shares a campus with the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the Henry Ford Estates. The school is renowned for its nursing and industrial sdesign programs.

      Schoolcraft College offers more than 70 majors at its Livonia campus. The culinary arts program supports its own four star restaurant.

      Wayne County Community College offers an array of programs at four campuses.
