The university offers programs that will prepare students for being accepted into veterinary school. It offers a medical science program for those who wish to pursue such subjects as veterinary medicine. However, in order to qualify for the medical science program, you will first need to complete a two year, undergraduate program (pre-medicine program) which will include such courses as English, social sciences, humanities, chemistry, biology and physics.
These preparation courses are given by the university to help you reach your goal of being accepted into a veterinary school. Once you have completed your first two years of the pre-medicine program you will stand a better chance of being admitted into the upper level courses in biology, math, physics and chemistry.
The university offers all prerequisite coursework you will need in order to successfully be admitted into veterinary school. This pre-professional coursework will take three years or longer to complete. The UWM offers help with their pre-professional advising office right from the beginning of a student's studies. This will help you plan your career path. In order for students to be better qualified at the end of their pre-professional coursework, the university recommends that the student also participates in voluntary or paid vet-related work. Pre-professional coursework will include subjects such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, English, statistics and physics.
This university also offers career path guidance for students wishing to eventually be accepted into a veterinary medicine school. They give you a pre-veterinary medical academic planning guide in a step-by-step format so you get a clear idea of which subjects you will need to focus on. UWM also offers two veterinary degree programs, DVM Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and VMD Veterinary Medical Doctor (these are equivalent degrees). Their pre-vet medical planning guide will provide you with all the required programs of study you will need to complete before they accept you into their veterinary degree program.
La Crosse will provide you with all the course equivalencies in order for you to gain admission into the UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. A chart of required studies is provided for you to help you get on the right career path. The subjects required are the sciences and English. The university also provides an undergraduate program that helps students gain experience working with animal and biomedical-related research.
