Michigan Schools That Offer Architecture

Obtaining a degree in architecture is a two-step process involving undergraduate study in a pre-professional architectural program and continued study for a master's degree in architecture. Only students who have achieved the advanced degree are qualified to take the national exam and attain the professional status of architect. Several universities in Michigan offer both the lower and upper levels of architectural degree study.
  1. University of Michigan

    • The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor addresses the technology of architectural design and construction. Changes in society, urban design and construction materials influence technique, and student architects are taught to be ahead of these influences. Students enroll in the school of architecture in their junior year, having satisfied prerequisite courses during their first two years of schooling. Studios and construction projects prepare students for the design and building courses of the final two years of the program. Admission to the university is necessary prior to advancing into the architecture program. Study abroad is offered around the world, including Europe, Asia and Scandinavia. Financial aid is available.

    Andrews University

    • Andrews University's School of Architecture is on the main campus in Berrien Springs. A Seventh-day Adventist faith-based university, the school was founded in 1874 and has gained a reputation for its culturally diverse student body and programs. Nearly 3,500 students are enrolled in over 200 programs. A Bachelor of Science in architecture is offered; however it is not a professional degree, but rather a prerequisite for the 5½-year master of architecture degree. The Bachelor of Science in architectural studies degree does not carry forward to the graduate school program. Applicants for admission must supply a high school transcript and grade point average, SAT or ACT scores, math placement exam scores, and the Andrews Partnership Scholarship estimate. Financial aid is available.

    University of Detroit Mercy

    • The University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture is a Jesuit and Mercy faith-based institution offering a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in architecture and the five-year, professional master of architecture degree. The bachelor's program serves as a foundation for continuing education in architecture. Design is at the core of the program, and design studios are a fundamental element in all years of the architectural program. Semesters in Warsaw, Mexico or Tuscany are included in the international program. The university's urban location drives its co-op program where students gain work experience in architectural offices. Admission is based on high school academic performance, SAT or ACT scores, activities and interests and academic goals. Financial aid is available.

    Lawrence Technological University

    • Lawrence Technological University in Southfield offers a bachelor degree in architecture but recommends enrolling in the five-year master's professional program. While most universities require two years of general education requirements prior to entering the architectural school, Lawrence makes architecture courses available during a student's freshman year. The curriculum is designed to incorporate an "integrated" system, utilizing the talents of landscape architects, urban designers, interior designers and lighting designers from the initial concept to the finished product. The Detroit Studio puts students in an urban environment studying neighborhood development projects. Study abroad takes place in Paris. High school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, a letter of recommendation and an essay are required for the admissions package. Students applying for the architecture school are also advised that high school course work must include algebra, trigonometry, calculus or senior math, chemistry and physics. Financial aid is available.
