Warren Wilson College, located in Swannanoa, North Carolina, has gone green in a number of ways. Not only does it have solar-charged carts and street lights, but it also has managed forests, organic gardens and hybrid and biodiesel vehicles. Warren Wilson is also one of the top universities in green building and design.
Located in Olympia, Washington, Evergreen State College is home to 800 acres of beach and forest, an organic farm, a compost facility, and electric cars. Evergreen State College has a "green roof" on their Seminar II building, which is made up of plant life. These plants, which include some perennial flowering plants, minimize heat exposure and UV rays. The rainwater that falls onto the roof is filtered through the roof system and then gradually released back into the environment.
Oberlin College is located in Oberlin, Ohio. Oberlin monitors the energy and water usage in dorms, serves locally grown foods, recycles materials daily and is home to the state's largest solar array. The solar array helps the university cut costs on other methods used to produce electricity. On campus, the Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies is geothermally heated, using significantly less energy than "normal" buildings.
Berea College, founded in 1855 in Berea, Kentucky, offers every single accepted student a full-ride scholarship. Berea is home to wind-power energy, eco-friendly appliances and solar panels. The solar panels help to reduce the dependency on carbon-based fuels, cut energy costs and provide a greener way of living for the students, faculty and staff.
