Green Architecture Colleges

A style of architectural design that uses sustainable and eco-friendly designs in place of more traditional building methods, green architecture is also found where clients desire to remodel, renovate or restructure a building in an environmentally-sound way. A large number of green architecture schools are available to choose from and the list grows longer by the day; architecture students no longer need to compromise when selecting a school with a program in sustainable design.
  1. Academy of Art University

    • The Academy of Art University founded in San Francisco, California in 1929 stresses "research and innovation in sustainable building design" in all of its courses. Coursework ranges in subject matter from environmental controls, sustainability, materials and methods of construction to the logic of meaning and the "art of making." Students at the Academy of Art University can choose to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in architecture or a Master of Architecture degree.

    Montana State University

    • The first year of a five and a half-year program for the Master of Architecture degree at the Montana State University seeks "to encourage students to explore the opportunities and expectations of an environmental design education." The second year of the program focuses on the student completing their core university courses while, in their third year, students learn to design environmentally sustainable buildings. During their fourth year of study, students are asked to complete a capstone project that "emphasizes professional responsibility" and the "principles of sustainability." In the fifth and final year of the program, students complete three studios projects designed to build the student's experience base and test his or her architectural ability.

    Ball State University

    • Ball State University offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts and a four-year Bachelor of Science program in environmental design for students who want to pursue an architecture-related career but do not necessarily want to become licensed architects. The first year of the program includes courses on architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning in order to emphasize that, "environmental planning and design are interconnected with all other disciplines." From here, students branch out into their own majors and areas of study in the following years.

    University of British Columbia

    • The School of Architecture at the University of British Columbia offers architecture students the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor's degree in environmental design. The program's self-proclaimed goal is to prepare students to enter the world as "skilled citizens [that] might eventually serve as advocates for a sustainable planet;" it seeks to do so by allowing students to participate in courses on the history of environmental architecture, themes present in environmental architecture and the environment and urban form, to name a few.
