Nursing Schools in the Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex

The Dallas area in Texas has quite a few nursing schools, each offering different programs. Nursing school can be expensive, so researching financial aid is an excellent start. There are a lot of private scholarships available for nursing majors. All schools listed here are accredited schools and qualified to offer federal and state financial aid. Nursing schools require students to complete general education and prerequisite classes before being accepted into a nursing major. You should work towards getting at least a C in all classes, but the higher the grade, the better your chances of being accepted into the nursing program.
  1. Tarrant County College

    • Tarrant County College offers an Associate in Nursing degree. Upon graduating and passing the NCLEX -- the national nursing examination -- students will become a registered nurse, or RN. There is also an accelerated program for those students who are currently LVNs, or Licensed Vocational Nurses, to become an RN. Tarrant County College has a standard day schedule of classes, but also offers night and part-time classes for students who can't study during the day. As of 2011, the cost of the program was $8200. Students wishing to enroll in the nursing program need to take the TEAS, or Test of Essential Academic Skills, complete general education courses and be admitted to Tarrant County College. The average GPA of entering students is 3.2.

    Texas Christian University

    • Texas Christian University has a number of requirements to enter the nursing program. Students need to be admitted as students to the university before applying to the major. Among the requirements are a 2.5 minimum GPA, CPR certification, completion of prerequisites, and taking the HESI/A2 admission assessment exam. In addition, students must pass a drug screening, background check and have up to date immunizations. Texas Christian University's nursing program graduates students with a bachelor's of science in nursing through a traditional program of study or an accelerate done. The cost of tuition as of 2011 is $30,090.

    Texas Women's University

    • Texas Women's University is actually a coed university now that offers several nursing programs. Students can study through a traditional program, a weekend program or an online nursing plan. Texas Women's University charges tuition per credit hour, however nursing students are charged an additional $25 per credit hour. Students in the Texas Women's University's nursing program graduate with a bachelor's of science in nursing. To apply to the program, students need to first gain acceptance to the university, have a minimum 2.0 GPA, complete prerequisite courses and currently be an LVN.

    University of Texas

    • The University of Texas has a Dallas campus, but the Arlington one offers one of the top nursing programs in the university system. The University of Texas has bachelor's, master's and PhD programs for students. There is also an accelerated program for students who already have an RN to get their bachelor's of science in nursing. Students can graduate by taking classes online or through a traditional class schedule. To enter the program, students must be accepted to the university, complete prerequisites and take the HESI test. As of 2011, the resident undergraduate tuition was $4,646 per year.
