Facts on Florida Colleges

In Florida, 66 percent of high school graduates continue on to post-secondary education at one of the 28 colleges. Two of the top 10 most-attended colleges are located in Florida--Miami Dade College, with 59,120 attendees, and the University of Central Florida in Orlando, with 53,401 attendees.     • There are 28 colleges in Florida in total. These colleges have 64 campuses over 182 sites, and the campuses house 2,073 buildings. The total land coverage of all these sites is 12,583 acres, and the combined capital assets of all 28 colleges are valued at $6.6 billion.

    Employees

    • Florida's colleges employ 45,289 members of staff all together. Of these, 52.2 percent are classed as instructional, 1.6 percent are executive/administration managers, 13.3 percent are classed as "professional," 16.5 percent are secretarial/clerical staff members, 1.3 percent are classified as "skilled craft," 5.6 percent are in service and maintenance and the remaining 9.5 percent are tech paraprofessionals.

    Money

    • The colleges in Florida received more than $1.7 billion dollars in funding during the 2008-09 term. Of this, 50 percent is classified under the general label "State Support," 39.6 percent came from student fees, 7 percent was provided through lottery funding, and 3.5 percent came from "other receipts."

    Students

    • In the 2009-10 term, a total of 449,469 students enrolled in Florida colleges. Of these students, 178,192 were full-time, and 271,277 were part time. In terms of demographics, the student population had a slight gender skew with 266,975 being female and 182,494 male, and minority groups were well-represented at 44.35 percent of students.

    Programs

    • In the 2009-10 term, 416,473 students were enrolled on "credit programs." The most popular choice were associate of arts degree programs, in which 283,897 students enrolled, followed by associate of science degree programs, which attracted 127,849 students, and finally 4,727 students were pursuing EPI programs (Educator Preparation Institute -- this is a teacher certification program).

    Library usage

    • In the 2008-09 term, Florida college libraries circulated 1,301,303 items. Students made 15,394,759 searches for resources in total, with electronic resources being more popular (11,482,530) than printed materials (3,912,229).

    Price of on-campus Living

    • The most expensive on-campus accommodation in Florida is offered by the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota ($14,840), followed by Florida International in Miami ($11,946), and Rollins College in Winter Park ($11,320). The cheapest accommodation is found at The Baptist College of Florida in Graceville ($4,066), followed by Hobe Sound Bible College ($4,680) and Trinity Baptist College ($5,040).
