Textbooks are the most important kind of book for college classes, and are used in most every program of study. Every course's textbooks are sold at the college's bookstore, but you may also be able to obtain them at a used bookstore (colleges often have used bookstores on campus), bookstores around the city, online or through a private sale from a former student. Textbooks range in price depending on their subject matter, and thick science and math texts can often cost more than $100. Don't be too eager to buy a textbook used in a previous year's course in an attempt to get ahead--the professor may be using a more recent edition for your class.
The need for workbooks ranges considerably, depending on the course you're taking. Some courses don't require official workbooks; you can do your classwork on regular paper or a laptop computer. But in some courses, especially labs, you'll be required to buy special workbooks that relate directly to the textbook used by the professor.
Adjusting to college may take some time. The adjustment period is easier if you're well prepared. This may include buying a planner to keep track of your classes, assignment due dates and other appointments. Office supply stores sell planners of all shapes and sizes. If you want to show your school spirit, you can buy one with your college's logo at the college bookstore.
Shopping for books, especially if you're a freshman, can be a daunting experience. As such, it's wise to buy certain books prior to the start of the year so you don't have to buy a substantial list once classes begin. This method will spread out your cost and save you time once school is under way. Before the school year, buy whatever planners and schedule books you think will help keep your life organized. You may be opt to use the schedule function on your cell phone, but it doesn't hurt to have a hard copy, too. You can also buy plain, lined workbooks before school starts. On your first day of college, the professor will supply you with a course outline containing the required textbooks. It's best to wait until this list is confirmed before you buy your texts.
