A human behavior course focuses on the relationships between individuals and their communities. Students in the course learn about various social perspectives, such as education, music, economics and religion. Additional topics include the theories of social phenomena, individual beliefs, youth culture, workings of the mind, criminal behavior, emotional intelligence and interpersonal communication.
Students enrolled in a social welfare course examine the social welfare policies in the U.S. and focus on how the economy, politics and society affects these policies. An opportunity is available for students to learn about the implicit and explicit values of human needs, nature and the effect of oppression, systems' frameworks and the discrimination of individuals.
A social policy course teaches students how social policies are delivered through different institutions. In addition to focusing on current social problems affecting disadvantaged citizens, the course addresses topics such as tax credits, deductions and vouchers. Students also learn about historical and contemporary polices that have evolved throughout history.
Students taking a social work methods course are introduced to the different disciplines and methods used in social work practice. An opportunity is available for students to learn about ethical dilemmas and social work ethics and values. Additional topics include identifying the roles of social workers, working with diverse populations and advocating for policy changes.
A bachelor of arts in social work also requires that students complete a social work practicum course. Students have an opportunity to work and learn under the supervision of a professional social worker and gain the skills necessary to work with clients. Opportunities are available to work with individuals, families and select groups of people.
