Wildlife Conservation Degrees in North Carolina Colleges

With over 18 million acres of natural forest and hundreds of miles of oceanic coast supporting a wide variety of plants and wildlife, North Carolina is a natural location for studying wildlife conservation. While North Carolina colleges and universities don't offer a specific degree in conservation, they do offer courses of study that are designed to help students land a job in the field.
  1. Haywood Community College

    • Haywood Community College (www.haywood.edu) offers a two-year degree within its Natural Resources Management Program, designed to prepare graduates for jobs in conservation and management for fish and wildlife resources. The Fish and Wildlife Management Technology concentration is accredited by The North American Wildlife Technology Association. The four-semester program includes courses in ecology, biology and wildlife policy.

Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University

    • The Nicholas School of the Environment (www.nicholas.duke.edu) offers a wide variety of course study for students interested in conservation. There are doctoral level (PhD), graduate professional level (Master of Environmental Management and Master of Forestry), and undergraduate level programs. A PhD program is available in Marine Conservation. There are also undergraduate and graduate courses available at the Duke Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, and a continuing education program, the Duke Environmental Leadership program, in the Nicholas School.

    University of North Carolina-Asheville

    • The Environmental Studies program at UNC-Asheville (www.unca.edu) includes courses in the sciences, economics, public policy, and social sciences. The interdisciplinary approach lets students concentrate in one of three areas: the Earth Sciences, Ecology and Environmental Biology, or Environmental Management and Policy. Students interested in conservation can focus on Ecology and Environmental Biology, which offers classes in wildlife management, or Environmental Management and Policy, which focuses on understanding the issues present in managing the environment. Students can also create their own individualized program.

    University of North Carolina-Wilmington

    • UNC at Wilmington (www.uncw.edu) provides an interdisciplinary approach to environmental studies. The Department of Environmental Studies offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, and Master of Arts degrees. The Bachelor of Arts degree, which combines courses in social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences, is geared for students interested in a job in conservation administration.

    Warren Wilson College

    • Warren Wilson College (www.warren-wilson.edu) offers a Bachelors of Arts or a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Studies. Students looking to specialize in wildlife conservation can pursue a concentration in Conversation Biology, Environmental Policy, or Sustainable Forestry.
