How to Greet at a Greek Sorority

Greek life is a component of nearly every university to some extent, large or small. A Greek sorority refers to a highly selective organization for female students at a university that claims to give women a noble purpose, friendships, exposure to philanthropy, boost her self esteem and better her character, as states Alexandra Robbins, author of the book "Pledged." With each Greek sorority comes very specific traditions, rules, secrets and rituals. For example, the custom of greeting other sorority members is dependent upon your rank in the sorority, the specific sorority and the situation.

  Find out your sorority's secret greeting. Most sororities have a secret greeting for other sisters and a greeting specifically for the Chaplain. For example, Delta Zeta uses the greeting "Philia," which is Greek for friendship.

  Find out your sorority's greeting for the Chaplain. For example, the Alpha Ros sorority requires that sisters place their right hand on the Chaplain's left shoulder and say the sorority's secret word and then allow the Chaplain to do the same.

  Find out if other secret greetings for other situations or events exist. For example, the Alpha Phi sorority has a a system of knocks to allow entry to chapter meetings.

  Practice the greetings alone, quizzing yourself on the appropriate time to use them and the correct pronunciations. Do not share these greetings with anyone or write them down.
