How to Cite Books Published in More Than One City in APA Style

Sometimes, when completing an otherwise normal citation for a book that you used as a resource for your term paper, you will find that the book is published in more than one location. However, if you are adhering to American Psychological Association (APA) citation guidelines, you need only list the first city of publication. This means that the citation will appear exactly as if it was published in only one location.

Instructions

    • 1

List the name of the author in the following format:

      Smith, Z.

    • 2

List the publication date in parentheses, followed by a period that falls outside the parentheses. For example:

      (2001).

    • 3

List the title of the book in italics, followed by a period. Capitalize only the first letter of the title and the first letter of any proper nouns. For example:

      A roach in Shakespeare's army.

If there is a subtitle, also capitalize the first letter of the subtitle. Separate the subtitle from the title with a colon. The subtitle should also appear in italics. For example:

A roach in Shakespeare's army: Finding the influence of Christopher Marlowe.

    • 4

List only the first city of publication given in the publication information at the front of the book. Follow this information with a colon. If the city and state are listed, list the city and state. For example:

      Boston:

      or

      Boston, MA:

    • 5

List the name of the publisher, followed by a period.

      Green Grass Press.

    • 6

Ensure that the finished citation appears in the following basic format:

Smith, Z. (2001). A roach in Shakespeare's army. Boston: Green Grass Press.
