How to Do a Term Paper on a John Maxwell Book

Many courses require that a student write a term paper instead of or in addition to the final exam. This paper, which is sometimes called a thesis paper, makes a specific claim about a topic and then backs it up with relevant sources. If you find a book about your topic -- such as a book by John Maxwell, a well-known leadership expert -- you can write your term paper about that book. If you do this, however, make sure to organize your paper so that it both makes a claim and uses the Maxwell book as the main source.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the term paper guidelines. You need to know the requirements of the paper in order to follow instructions. Otherwise, you may write a "good" paper but received a poor grade for not writing it the way the professor asked.

    • 2

Choose the Maxwell book that you intend to write your term paper about. Maxwell has written and published nearly 15 books, so you'll need to choose and read the book before starting the paper.

    • 3

Develop a thesis for your paper. In other words, what is the purpose of the paper? What do you intend to talk about in relation to the Maxwell book? A strong thesis should be something you intend to prove. For example, if you read "Talent Is Never Enough," you might want to prove that a person must have both talent and people skills to succeed in the business world. Craft this into a one-sentence claim. That's your thesis.

    • 4

Write an outline. Start with an introduction section that includes a phrase about how you will introduce your paper. Also include your thesis statement. In the body, list out each point that supports your thesis. Underneath each point, briefly list references from the Maxwell book that prove each point. In the conclusion portion, write a phrase reminding you how you will end the paper. You'll expand on the outline in the paper, so don't write entire paragraphs. Only write short sentences that remind you about the points you will write about in the paper.

    • 5

Write the paper by following your outline. Each main point in the body should be one paragraph. The first sentence of the paragraph should explain the point. The rest of the paragraph should provide proof that backs up the point, and this proof should come directly from the Maxwell book, since that is what you're writing about.

    • 6

Revise and edit your paper according to the style listed in the guidelines that your teacher provided. This includes appropriately citing your sources, such as the Maxwell book, and ensuring that you have followed the rules of grammar. After the editing and revision process, your paper is ready for you to present to your teacher.
