Complete your high school diploma or GED program before applying to sonography programs.
Fulfill all of the admission requirements for Delaware Technical and Community College in Wilmington and Georgetown, Delaware. These are the only accredited diagnostic medical sonography programs in the state. All prospective students are required to attend an information session and complete an application for the college, unless you are already a current student. You also need to pass a background check. To be considered for admission into the program, students are required to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (either high school or college, depending on if you're applying with a high school degree only or are transferring into the program with some college experience). Students should be able to lift 50 pounds, have use of both hands, be able to stand for long periods of time and be compassionate to patients.
Complete required courses such as pathophysiology, acoustical physics, introduction to patient care, abdominal sonography, obstetrical sonography, vascular sonography, anatomy and physiology, general psychology, medical terminology and general chemistry. These courses include both classroom time and laboratory experience. Students are also required to complete three clinical internships, where they gain hands-on experience in various medical settings and specialties as student diagnostic medical sonographers.
Study for and pass the Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) licensing exam. This enables you to begin practicing as a diagnostic medical sonographer. If you wish to practice medical sonography in a specific specialty, such as cardiography or vascular technology, you are required to pass a specific exam to gain the credentials.
