How to Do Citations for Online Journals in MLA Format

If you write research papers, chances are high that you will need to know how to list references in the style of MLA, or Modern Language Association. Many sources, including journals, are available online. Therefore, it is important to know how to reference these online sources. According to Cornell University Library, "citations for online sources, like those for print sources, should provide information that both identifies a source and allows that source to be located and retrieved again."

Instructions

    • 1

List the name of the author or editor. The correct format is to type the author's last name, then a comma, followed by the first name and a period.

    • 2

Show the title of the journal article. The title should be followed by a period and enclosed in quotation marks.

    • 3

Type the online journal information. This includes the name of the online journal in italic type, followed by a space. Add the volume number, in regular type, followed by a space. Put the publication year in parentheses, followed by a colon.

    • 4

Indicate the page numbers you are referencing. Type the beginning page number, followed by a hyphen, then the ending page number. If the journal is online only and does not use page numbers, use this abbreviation to show that there are no page numbers: n. pag. Include a period after the abbreviation.

    • 5

Show that you used an online journal by typing the following: Web. Include a period after the word.

    • 6

Indicate the date you found the information online. The proper format is to list the date first. This is followed by the month, which is abbreviated except for May, June and July. Then the year is listed. There are no commas used in the date.
