How to Format in Accordance With MLA

Whether you're an assistant professor looking to secure tenure and submitting an article to a journal or a student trying to get an A in your freshman composition course, understanding Modern Language Association format is important. The Modern Language Association gives its formatting guidelines, along with basic style suggestions and information on how to cite your sources, in "The Modern Language Association Handbook," which is currently in its seventh edition. At nearly 300 pages, however, the "Handbook" itself can prove a hassle to navigate.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your name, the name of your instructor (if applicable), the name of the journal or course to which you are submitting the paper and the date in the top left corner of your first page.

    • 2

Create a header and align it to the right side of the page. Your header should include your last name and page numbers for your paper.

    • 3

Set one inch margins on all sides of your paper. One inch margins are the default setting in many word processors, including Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010. Use the TAB key to indent your paragraphs one inch from the left-hand margins. Double space your paper and include only one space following periods.
