How to Do a Reference for a Telephone Interview APA Style

All types of publication follow a certain format or style. A well-known style in academic disciplines is APA Style. It stands for the American Psychological Association and applies mostly to political science, psychology and communication papers. APA has specific guidelines on how to cite sources. Usually, you must do so both in the text of a paper and in a references section at the end. But all personal communications, including telephone interviews, deviate from these rules.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the place in your text where information from the phone interview is used. APA Style requires that all references be cited within the text only.

    • 2

Insert a space after the last word in the sentence or paragraph that includes information from the interview. Type an open parenthesis, the first and middle initial of the person you talked to and his last name. Add a comma and then “telephone interview.” Add another comma, and write the full date of the interview. End with a closing parenthesis, followed by a period. For example: (B. A. Jones, telephone interview, Jan. 12, 2010).

    • 3

Cite the telephone interview differently, if you use the name of the person within the sentence. For instance, if you write, “B. A. Jones said,” or a similar attribution, format the in-text citation as described in Step 2, but omit the person's name. For example: According to B. A. Jones, alcohol affects a person's perspective on nonverbal communication (telephone interview, Jan. 12, 2010).
