Scholarships for Masters in Health Sciences

A master's degree in health sciences is required for many professional health occupations, including nursing, pharmacy, medicine and medical research. Educational costs for master's in health sciences can be difficult for many students to afford independently, so several organizations and educational institutions offer scholarships and fellowship opportunities to increase the number of students who pursue these degrees.
  1. The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professionals (ASAHP)

    • Available for students who are already enrolled in a health-related degree program at one of ASAHP's 117 member institutions, the organization awards $1,000 to exceptional students to help with education-related expenses. Academic merit is the main criteria for this award, so significant financial need is not a deciding factor. To apply, students must submit the application found at ASAHP.org, a nomination letter from an ASAHP institution member at the participating college or university, a resume, and a one-page personal statement describing the student's unique contribution to the health industry.

    National Health Service Corps Scholarship

    • Part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, this scholarship covers the cost of attendance and school-related fees for up to four years and has the unique quality of being entirely tax-free. Some recipients of this award also receive a living stipend of more than $1,000 per month, which is taxed as income. To be eligible for the award, students must be U.S. citizens or nationals who are already enrolled or accepted into an accredited program in nursing, medicine or dentistry. After graduation, scholarship recipients must complete one year of volunteer health service in specially-designated "health professional shortage areas" for each year of receiving the award.

Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE)

    • SOPHE is an organization for health professionals that offers a variety of awards and scholarships to both students and professionals who demonstrate superior work and potential in the health industry. Some of the financial awards they offer include the Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship Award for $1,500 and the SOPHE 21st Century Fund Student Scholarship, which provides up to $500 for expenses incurred for travel and accommodations for academic conference attendance. Additionally, SOPHE offers several fellowships that financially support and train students in health-related research, hands-on health services and projects about health education.

O.C. Hubert Charitable Trust, CDC Foundation

    • This scholarship offers public health practice opportunities in developing countries to students who are already in their third or fourth year of medical or veterinary school. Fellows are under the supervision of health professionals from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and spend up to three months working on specific health issues in their designated countries. The fellowship provides financial costs of travel and living through the duration of the program in countries such as Kenya, Vietnam and Guatemala.
