The first thing a person should do is fill out the free application for federal student aid, also known as FAFSA. A student might be eligible for different grants, scholarships, loans and work-study opportunities. The different types of loans and grants a person receives depends on age, location, financial situation and need. All students are eligible for FAFSA, unless they have a drug conviction for an offense while they were receiving federal student aid, or owe a refund on a federal grant, or be in default on a federal student loan.

State grants are available to all nursing students. The grants are provided to residents of a state and the money doesn't have to be paid back. The grants are awarded on a need basis. The grants are available in almost all states and the student may continue to receive the grant each year while completing her education. A student can apply for this type of grant through a school's financial aid office or online through the state.
