      Apply for a $700 North Carolina Student Incentive Grant (NCSIG) from the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. It's an option if you're a full-timer at a North Carolina college or university. Or compete for one of 13,000 North Carolina Community College Grants given annually by this agency.

      Use a relative's State of North Carolina employment status to apply for State Employees Association of North Carolina (SEANC) Scholarship funds. Re-apply for this $1,000 award annually. Contact the People Helping People Scholarship (PHPS) program if you don't qualify for a SEANC Scholarship, since these grants benefit relatives of public sector employees, too. Known as a State Employees' Credit Union Foundation gift, the PHPS awards up to $10,000 per university student and $5,000 per community collegian annually.

      Turn top grades into from $750 to $3,000 by successfully applying for a Golden LEAF Scholars Program grant given only to rural North Carolinians. Use your excellent GPA to qualify for a North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children grant if you're gifted, have a disability and need one of the 10 $500 grants awarded each year.

Major in green energy to compete for $15,000 in Energy Scholarship Program funds divided among students at Cape Fear, Fayetteville Technical or Wake Technical Community Colleges each year.

      Launch your college career on any University of North Carolina campus by applying for a $3,500 Jagannathan Scholarship earmarked for incoming freshman only. Get a laptop computer if you become one of five lucky student applicants tapped for a $1,000 Crumley and Associates' "Crib to College Scholarship."

      Seek a Carolina Education Lottery Scholarship (ELS) and receive from $100 to $2,500 annually or apply for a North Carolina Legislative Tuition Grant (NCLTG) from the state's General Assembly if you're enrolling in an independent, nonprofit institution. Qualify for an NCLTG via the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority and you'll receive up to $1,950. Finally, consider North Carolina's State Contractual Scholarship Fund.
