Alabama Student Grants

Obtaining grants and scholarships is a necessity for many U.S. college students and the state of Alabama offers no safe harbor. Tuition at public four-year colleges in the state rose 41 percent in the decade 1992-2002. Financial aid awards decreased 46 percent. According to a 2009 report by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, the majority of Americans believe that access to a college education is waning, due to the high cost of tuition. In Alabama, the Commission on Higher Education tries to combat that perception by promoting public student aid programs.
  1. Alabama Student Grant Program

    • The Student Grant Program is not based on need. The $1,200 grant is available only to Alabama undergraduate students attending one of 14 colleges or universities in the state: University of Mobile, Oakwood College, Southern Vocational College, Selma University, Birmingham-Southern College, Spring Hill College, Concordia College, Samford University, Huntingdon College, Southeastern Bible College, Faulkner University, Miles College, Stillman College or Judson College.

    • Alabama Student Assistance Program awards are given to students in the state with the greatest financial need. Only undergraduates are eligible to receive the awards, which range from a low of $300 to a high of $2,500 annually. Students may use the awards at both public and private colleges and universities in the state.

The award is small--$1,000 per year--but it is not based on demonstrating financial need. Students can use the funds to pay for books, supplies, school fees or tuition.
