The University of Connecticut's (UConn) women's basketball team has a rich history. In 2010, the team won its seventh NCAA women's basketball championship and completed its second perfect season in a row. The team also holds a record 78-game winning streak. Thanks to this and other successes, women's athletics are highly regarded at UConn.

According to the University of California, Los Angeles' website, UCLA was selected as Sports Illustrated's best collegiate athletic program. UCLA women's track athletes won the 100-meter dash in four straight Olympics: Evelyn Ashford (1984), Florence Griffith-Joyner (1988) and Gail Devers (1992 and 1996). UCLA has a longstanding tradition of supporting women's athletics.
