The department of bioethics of the National Institutes of Health provides assistance to pre-doctoral students through its pre-doctoral fellowship in bioethics. These fellowships support a student for two years and provide stipends in accordance with current U.S. government rates. To be eligible, a student must have an undergraduate degree and should be planning to undertake postgraduate studies. Applicants do not need to have prior training in bioethics to be eligible. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, awards fellowships to pre-doctoral candidates through individual predoctoral fellowships to promote diversity in health-related research. NHLBI diversity fellowships support full-time training for up to five years, and provide a monthly stipend. To be eligible, a student must be preparing to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical or behavioral science. A student must also belong an underrepresented racial or ethnic minority, have a disability or come from an underprivileged background to be eligible for an NIH diversity fellowship.
