Individuals seeking scholarships for undergraduate study in Library Science will likely have to investigate on the local level, with the particular universities to which they are applying. For instance, one of the United States' top ten schools for Library Science, The University of Texas School of Information, has several scholarships for undergraduates in two main categories: the Endowed Presidential Scholarship and the Academic Competitive Scholarship. For each, the main requirements are that students be in good academic standing and be taking at least 9 semester hours. Other universities also have scholarships geared to undergraduates, but the students must search them out through their application processes.
The American Library Association does not award scholarships to undergraduates; however, there are a large number of scholarships available to those in graduate programs. Some of their scholarships are aimed toward minority applicants in order to promote diversity in the field, and there are also awards that are geared toward specialized areas, such as a candidate who is a member of library support staff.
If a library science student determines on a specific area of study, he or she can pursue a variety of scholarships in that field. For instance, there are scholarships specifically designated toward individuals seeking eventual employment in law libraries, music libraries, historical libraries, art libraries, or medical libraries.
