West Virginia PROMISE Scholarships are renewable scholarships that provide up to $4,750 per year to eligible students while they pursue an undergraduate degree. To be eligible, a student must be a graduate of a West Virginia high school, must attend a college in West Virginia, and must have a high school grade-point average of at least 3.0. A student must also have a composite ACT score of 22 or better, and combined SAT score of at least 1020. A recipient must keep his college GPA at 2.75 or better for his first year of college and at 3.0 or better every year thereafter in order to renew his PROMISE Scholarship. The College Foundation of West Virginia makes scholarship money available to students pursuing a career in education through the Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship Program. This program provides awards of up to $5,000 per year. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. In order to qualify, a student must be a resident of West Virginia, and must commit to teaching in West Virginia for a minimum of two years for every year of support received under this program. If a recipient teaches in an underserved area of West Virginia, she only needs to teach one year for each year of support received. Marshall University, with campuses in Huntington and South Charleston, offers a variety of scholarships specifically for residents of West Virginia. The renewable John Marshall Scholarship is awarded in annual amounts of up to $4,200 to incoming freshmen with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better, a composite ACT score of at least 30, and a combined SAT score of at least 1320. The renewable Presidential Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen in annual amounts of up to $1,500. To be eligible, a student must have a composite ACT score of at least 25, a combined SAT score of at least 1130, and a high school GPA of at least 3.5.
