Any working parent knows that looking after a child while managing a full or part-time work load is no easy task. Financial concerns are responsible for many parents choosing to postpone or forgo their educational plans. Fortunately, several organizations offer scholarships that are perfect for working parents. These scholarships enable parents to return to school while raising a child and continuing to work.

    • Project Working Mom awards full scholarships to parents seeking to earn a degree from an online university. You can apply for this scholarship year-round, making it an ideal program for parents struggling to work an education into their already busy schedule. Go to elearners.com "Resources" page to select an online university that's right for you. Despite the name, working fathers are also eligible. The website also provides information and news for working parents seeking an education.

    Scholarships Offered by Universities

    • Several scholarships are offered directly by financial aid departments at different universities. The University of Wisconsin-Madison, for example, offers the Single Parent Scholarships for parents that are the primary economic supporter in the family. You must be planning to earn a minimum of nine credits at the undergraduate level or six at the graduate level. Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,000. The application deadline is March 1st and you must provide proof of your financial need.

      Another such scholarship is offered by the College of Dupage in Illinois. The financial aid office awards $1,000 to 10 single parents every year. This scholarship also applies to part-time students, allowing parents to continue working while earning their degree. Students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and be a resident of District 502 in Illinois. Scholarships are only to be used on tuition, fees and books. The deadline for application is May 1st.

    Scholarships offered by Private Companies and Foundations

    • Many scholarships are offered by companies or foundations around the country. For example, the Raise the Nation Continuing Education scholarship is for women earning an average of $27,500 a year. There are two deadlines; August 1st and December 1st, respectively, and the amount averages between $500 to $1,000 based on need. In addition, Raise the Nation offers scholarships to children of single parents.

      The financial aid office at your university can probably tell you about private scholarships. Scholarship search engines such as College Board and Broke Scholar are also useful for finding private scholarships for working parents.
