ROTC Scholarship Qualifications

Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) are a college program that combines a college degree with United States military training. College scholarships are based upon merit and usually cover full tuition expenses for college, as long as applicants are prepared to accept active or reserve duty U.S. military service after graduation. The three major branches of U.S. ROTC include the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Air Force.
  1. Navy

    • In order to qualify for a U.S. Navy ROTC scholarship, applicants must be physically fit. Before applying, applicants must not have more than 30 semester hours of college under their belt. Navy ROTC scholarship recipients must be between 17 and 27 years of age. They must have a high school diploma or a general education diploma. Applicants must have no moral objection to bear arms and defend the United States Constitution. After graduation, scholarship recipients must agree to at least five years of active duty service in the U.S. Navy.

    Army

    • The U.S. Army ROTC program offers two-year, three-year, and four-year scholarships. Two-year scholarships are offered for students seeking associates degrees, while four-year scholarships are for students completing a bachelor's degree program. Three-year programs are designed for students who have already completed a year of college. The U.S. army requires applicants to be U.S. citizens. Citizens under 17 years of age and over 26 years of age may not apply for a scholarship. They must have scored a minimum of 920 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT, in addition to meeting physical requirements for the army. A minimum high school grade point average of 2.50 is required. Army ROTC scholarships are only handed out to those individuals who agree to accept a minimum of a four-year commission on active or reserve duty.

    Air Force

    • High school students who intend to join a U.S. Air Force ROTC program at college must meet certain qualifications besides U.S. citizenship in order to obtain a scholarship. You must have at least an 1100 on the combined math and verbal portions of the SAT or an ACT composite score of 24. GPA must be at least 3.0, and your grade point average must put you in the top 40 percentile of your class. According to the U.S. Air Force ROTC, the average GPA of scholarship recipients was 3.77 with an SAT score of 1260. Applicants are required to complete a physical fitness assessment to become eligible for a scholarship. Students already in college may become part of the U.S. Air Force ROTC scholarship program as long as they take an officer qualifying test, meet physical fitness requirements and have at least a 2.5 college grade point average.
