Women's Football Scholarships

In the United States, women's football is typically referred to as women's soccer. There are plenty of soccer scholarships available for women, as more than 500 NCAA Division I and II schools field programs. Factor in other athletic organizations such as the NAIA and NJCAA, and there are ample opportunities for women who hope to play college soccer. That said, scholarships for women's soccer players tend to vary by level of play, as each governing body has a different set of rules of many how scholarships are allowed.
  1. Division I Scholarships

    • The NCAA allows each Division I women's soccer team to offer 12 "full" scholarships, according to CollegeSportsScholarships.com. Coaches can divide these scholarships however they wish, offering 12 full rides or 24 partial rides, or any other combination. Since this is widely considered the highest level of competition for women's soccer players, many D-I schools will also work harder to get those on partial scholarships other forms of financial aid. North Carolina, Stanford and Santa Clara are among the more than 300 universities that offer scholarships for women's soccer.

    Division II Scholarships

    • The rules for NCAA Division II women's college soccer programs are the same as D-I programs, with the exception of the fact D-II programs receive 9.9 full scholarships to divide among its players (as opposed to 12). But like D-I coaches, those in D-II are free to divide up the scholarships however they wish. West Chester University (Pennsylvania), Mesa State University (Colorado) and the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut) are among the more than 200 Division II programs that offer scholarships to women's soccer players.

    NAIA Scholarships

    • The amount of scholarship money available for women's soccer players at the NAIA level varies by school, but the majority offer little. While the NAIA doesn't regulate scholarship funding, many universities that compete at this level base it on money that comes into the athletic department, with each of the sports programs receiving a percentage. Among the colleges participating in the NAIA that offer women's soccer scholarships are: Indiana Wesleyan, Lindsay Wilson College (Kentucky) and California Baptist University.

    NJCAA Scholarships

    • A wide array of junior colleges and community colleges competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) offer financial aid for women's soccer players. These types of two-year colleges are governed by the National Junior College Athletic Association, which allows programs to distribute scholarship funding as they see fit. Most of that money is given to larger programs, such as football and basketball, but much depends on the college -- and it's dedication to women's soccer. Western Texas, North Idaho and Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College are among the schools that compete at this level offering scholarships for women's soccer.
