Female Graduate Scholarships

Several scholarship opportunities exist for women hoping to pursue graduate studies in an array of academic fields. Although awards vary in monetary value and require different kinds of community or leadership involvement from women applicants, most of the scholarships have in common a desire to further women's involvement in advanced-degree programs.
  1. Society of Women Engineers

    • According to its website, "The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders." The SWE was founded in 1950 and currently offers training and development programs, networking opportunities and scholarships to women who wish to pursue careers in the fields of engineering, engineering technology and computer sciences. The SWE offers scholarships to women admitted to accredited graduate programs in these fields. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000.

    NWSA Graduate Scholarships

    • The National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) offers a graduate scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to its members, who have until March 1 of each calendar year to apply. According to the NWSA website, qualified applicants should, "in the fall of the year of the award, be engaged in the research or writing stages of a master's thesis or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Dissertation in the interdisciplinary field of women's studies." The thesis or dissertation should be about women.

      NWSA also offers four $500 scholarships to women of a minority, which can be applied for until May 1 each year. These scholarships are available to female graduate student applicants in each of the following categories: African descent, Latina descent, Asian/Asian-American/Pacific-Islander/Arab/Middle East Asian descent and African Native American/American Indian/Alaskan Native descent.

    Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation

    • According to the Albany Law School website, the Ethel Louise Foundation offers scholarships to "women graduate students with physical disabilities. They must be active in a local, state or national disability organization, either in person or online." Scholarship awards range in value from $500 to $2,000 and can be applied for until approximately June 1 each year. Scholarships are awarded based on the applicant's academic performance and leadership involvement.

    Dorothy Harris Endowed Scholarships

    • According to the Women's Sports Foundation website, each year, two Dorothy Harris Endowed Scholarships are awarded in amounts up to $3,000 to two women pursuing master's or doctorate degrees in physical education, sport management, sport psychology or sport sociology. Applicants will be evaluated based on career goals, grade point average, financial need, research studies and sport participation and/or influence.
