Jewish Community Service & Scholarships

Jewish community service is a prerequisite for many Jewish scholarships, and some awards are specifically linked to an expectation that beneficiaries will later go on to careers in the field of Jewish communal service. A major database of scholarships is maintained by Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, and many of its awards are provided with the thought that successful recipients will later make communal service contributions. Students should also look to their local Jewish Federation for additional scholarships. Some available scholarships do not expect students to continue in communal service, but expect successful applicants will have a history of such activity, even if they intend to pursue careers unrelated to professional communal service. This is especially true for lay leadership positions in the Jewish community, which typically look beyond individuals with professional qualifications in communal service to people with strong credentials in medicine, law, and business. Applicants seeking scholarships of this nature should emphasize the intent to give back to the community after they have realized some of their career aspirations.

    Local Scholarships

    • A large number of smaller awards are available in local communities. Often, the requirement to return to do communal service is less significant than a history of past community service. Also, local scholarships may prefer applicants from their own region--for example, the Leroy Weiner Scholarship gives preference to students from Westborough, MA. but students from all over the United States are generally eligible.
