Familiarize yourself with a QWERTY keyboard. Since the Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT) has replaced paper testing in most countries, candidates use computer equipment that they are most likely to encounter during their course of study in an English-speaking country. It is best to practice on a QWERTY keyboard so you are at ease during the actual test.
Read English texts and authentic documents as much as possible. On the TOEFL exam, mainly academic texts are used as reading selections. The Cambridge Preparation software contains practice test questions to go with the passages as these are included in the sample testing materials.
Listen to lectures and English-language music and television programs to build fluency and vocabulary. On this portion of the TOEFL, candidates will listen to six selections (academic lectures, conversations and classroom discussions) and then answer questions about what they have heard. The Cambridge Preparation software contains a CD to practice this portion of the test.
Check pronunciation by speaking as much as possible prior to the testing date. The TOEFL exam asks candidates to respond to two independent tasks where they must spontaneously express an opinion in detail. On the following four tasks in the speaking cycle, candidates use integrated skills to complete the tasks. Candidates will read a short selection or listen to a lecture, and they will then be asked to respond to both pieces and compare them. Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL helps candidates sharpen techniques for the speaking exam. The Supporting Skills section of the software is designed to revise grammar, build vocabulary and aid pronunciation skills, all of which are essential to pass the speaking exam.
Write about and respond to practice essay topics. The TOEFL exam requires applicants to write one independent essay in which they explain an opinion about a specific issue. The second writing task is to listen to part of a lecture, read a short passage and compare and contrast the two, highlighting important points and ideas in a well-organized academic essay. The Cambridge Preparation includes sample essay topics and listening and reading materials that are similar to the ones candidates will be asked to respond to when they sit the exam.
