The Healthy Schools website discusses a study done at Westview High School in Beaverton, Oregon, in which students were placed in different rooms that were set at different temperatures. Their performance on tests was measured in order to determine how various temperatures affected attentiveness.
Students tested in the classroom set at 61 degrees averaged a 76 percent passing rate. Students tested in the classroom set at 81 degrees had a 72 percent passing rate. Students tested in the classroom set at 72 degrees averaged a 90 percent passing rate.
This study indicates that air conditioning does have an impact on students' attentiveness. If the room is too hot or too cold, students are likely to perform poorly on activities in which high attentiveness is required.
