The refrigeration school trains students on residential air conditioning, mechanical principles, refrigeration techniques, advanced air conditioning, electrical principles and troubleshooting along with 21,000 square feet of hands-on materials, laboratory and support service. Students may choose air conditioning courses a la carte (each course provides a certificate of completion) or study for the school's associate of occupational studies in mechanical maintenance engineering degree, which takes about 14 months during the day or 20 months during the evening. Graduates receive placement assistance.
The Refrigeration School accepts students without a high school diploma or GED, but requires a skills test and evaluation.

Earn a certificate in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration in just 36 weeks through the Advanced Training Institute's day or evening program. Topics cover humidity, temperature control, troubleshooting, residential gas systems, EPA regulations, ice machines, freezers, walk-in coolers, reach-ins, commercial equipment and compressors. Half the program is completed through laboratory, hands-on experience.
Advanced Training Institute states that many of its graduates have jobs prior to graduation; the school offers career assistance such as interview techniques and resume services, plus job placement and salary statistics. There is also a career services department. A high school diploma or GED is not required.

North Seattle Community College offers the only HVAC program of its kind in the country, where students take courses in cooling and heating service, cooling and heating systems servicing, technical math, essentials of HVAC and introduction to electricity and electronics. Students may opt for the one-year certificate program or two-year associate degree. Each includes an internship and field trips to engineering and mechanical contracting firms for real-world air conditioning exposure and experience.
Students require a high school diploma or GED; North Seattle may waive this requirement for students under the age of 18.
