How do I Work Effectively With a Myers-Briggs Sheet?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a selection of multiple-choice questions used since 1943 to determine personality features. No wrong answers apply to a MBTI sheet, but responding honestly is the key to discovering information about learning style, a suitable job and relationship compatibility. Based on the clinical observations of 20th century Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, the MBTI measures two kinds of mental orientation and six cognitive functions to understand preferences for introversion or extroversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling and judging or perceiving. The score determines a four-letter "type" based on 16 variations of these eight functions of human personality.

Look at the score for an "E" or an "I." The "E" stands for extroversion, which indicates a tendency to be drawn outward into the world of people and objects. The "I" is for introversion and applies to people who are oriented inward toward ideas and impressions.

Examine the score for an "S" or an "N." "S," or sensing, types focus on concrete information. People who use intuition, for which "N" stands, find patterns and possibilities.

    • 4

Look at the score for a "T" or an "F." "T," or thinking types seek analysis and logic in cause and effect. Those who are oriented toward feeling, for which "F" stands, are value-oriented and person-centered

Check the score for a "J" or a "P." Preference for planning and organization describes the "J," or judging, type. People who favor perceiving, for which "P" stands, are flexible and spontaneous.
