Electrical Exam Training

The Master Electrician Exams assess your knowledge and ability to become a licensed electrician with the state supplying the license. Some states do not require that an electrician be licensed to obtain work; however, passing the exams and obtaining a license add respect to your profession and improve your skills.
  1. Prerequisites

    • In most states, to obtain the electrical journeyman's license, you must be at least 20 years of age and have completed at least 8,000 hours of journeyman experience within four years. To obtain the master electrician's license, you must have 12,000 hours of experience within six years and have held the electrical journeyman's license for no less than two years.

    What to Expect

    • Know the National Electrical Code. Be prepared to present a photo identification card when you arrive at the examination location. The exam is open book. The materials for the exam will be supplied to you.

    Do's and Don'ts

    • Cell phones, pagers and other personal electronic devices are prohibited in the examination room. Do not talk with other applicants during the exam. You may not ask questions of the test administrator.

    About the Exam

    • Examination questions are mixed in format: some are multiple choice; others require answers from calculations or reasoning. Depending on your exam, the length of the examination may be 50 to 80 questions. You are allotted 5½ hours to take the exam. Passing score for the exam is 70 percent or better.

    Helpful Tips

    • Read each question carefully. Some questions may be written in a negative format, such as "which does not apply." Other questions may require more than one answer. Brush up on general math skills and electrical theory computation skills.
