Select the multimeter to the desired electrical setting according to the question in the Penn Foster test. For example, if it's about voltage, set it measure volts,. If it's amperes, set it to measure amps. A multimeter can also measure Ohms and wattage.

Reflect on the question in the Penn Foster test then use the metal sensors on the ends of the red and black wires connected to the multimeter to touch the terminals of the electrical equipment you need to measure.

    • 3

Place the sensor on the end of the red wire onto the positive terminals of the item the Penn Foster test is requesting you use to measure the electrical energy. Place the sensor on the end of the black wire onto the negative terminal. You usually find the positive terminals is labeled "+" and the negative "-."

Read the measurement on the multimeter display. Write your answer to the question in the appropriate place.

    • 5

Continue to use your multimeter if you need to use it for other questions in the Penn Foster test. Ensure you set the multimeter to measure the correct type of reading from the device you are testing such as voltage, amperes or Ohms.
