How to Test the Voltage With an Analog Multimeter

Multimeters are capable of reading electrical voltage, resistance and current. Digital readouts are common among newer multimeters, but if you have an older model, you may have an analog readout that uses a dial. Analog multimeters are more sensitive than their digital counterparts and require careful handling to avoid damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the dial on the multimeter to the measurement and range you want to check. When measuring voltage with an analog multimeter, always measure DC voltage. Unlike digital multimeters, the dial on an analog multimeter must be calibrated to a specific range. Set the dial to the increment above what you expect to measure; you can always adjust the range downward.

    • 2

      Turn on the multimeter.

    • 3

Plug the red lead of the multimeter into the "Voltage" jack, and the black lead into the "COM" or ground jack.

    • 4

Connect the alligator clips on the other end of the leads to metal connection points on the device to be tested. If the needle indicates a negative measurement, reverse the positions of the leads.
