How to Beat the TEAS Test

If you want to become a nurse, you'll have to prove you can handle the study load by completing a test that shows you're capable of completing a nursing program. That test is called the TEAS -- short for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) --- and it's an aptitude test that assesses reading, science, math and English in about three-and-a-half hours. Beating the test is simple --- just study the basic skills and get comfortable with the exam format. Since many people learn differently, you can try a variety of techniques to prep.

Review the basic information covered in the TEAS. The portion covering math will look at everything from whole numbers and fractions to algebraic equations and percentages. Reading looks at paragraph and passage comprehension and expects the test taker to be able to draw logical conclusions. The English sub-test includes grammar and vocabulary. The science section covers general science and specific concepts to biology, chemistry, physiology and scientific reasoning.

    • 2

Look over notes, textbooks and exams from high school. The TEAS assesses a student's ability to attend a post-secondary institution, so the information will be a review of concepts studied in high school.

    • 3

Take practice tests to become comfortable with the format of the TEAS. The test is 170 multiple choice questions. When taking practice tests, try to recreate the environment of the actual test. Stay in a quiet area with no distractions and implement the real time limitations. Test takers have 50 minutes for reading, 56 minutes for math, 38 minutes for science and 65 minutes for English.

Review the average scores of each section on your practice tests. As the test date gets closer, focus on your weakest section(s). Continue practice testing and reviewing information of those sections until you see improvements on your scores.
