      Purchase a multimeter from a hardware store. Make sure that the two probes of your multimeter are insulated with plastic rubber capping.

      Hold the insulated part of the probe. Touch the bare metal end of the probe to one side of circuit outlet. Hold the insulated part of the other probe and touch the bare metal end of the probe into the other side of the outlet.

      Check the calibrated scale of your multimeter. If the multimeter shows a reading around 110 volts, the circuit is live.
