How to Use an Electrical Multimeter

Multimeters are electrical testing devices most commonly used to measure the voltage in an electrical circuit. These devices are employed to determine that the correct voltage is being maintained or supplied to an electrical circuit. A multimeter is also used to determine if any electrical power is being received by an electrical device or to ensure that no power is being used by the electrical device for safe access and repair.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on the multimeter.

    • 2

Turn the multimeter to the correct voltage type. This is usually performed by turning a dial on face of the dial to either "VAC" or "VDC" for AC and DC devices, respectively.

    • 3

Locate the two leads coming from the multimeter. The leads are usually colored black and red.

    • 4

Touch the exposed metallic portion of the black electrical lead to the negative terminal on the electrical circuit.

    • 5

Touch the exposed metallic portion of the red electrical lead to the positive terminal on the electrical circuit.

    • 6

Examine the reading on the face of the multimeter. This reading conveys the voltage level contained within the electrical circuit. It is often advantageous to watch this value and ensure it remains relatively stable. If the voltage does not remain stable there is either a problem with the electrical circuit's wiring or the power source is inadequate. In either case, the power fluctuations must be corrected to receive an accurate reading.
