Study Preparation for the Registered Dietitian Exam

The Registered Dietitian Exam is administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing agency for the American Dietetic Association. The computerized, standardized test consists of 125 to 145 multiple choice questions. According to the CDR, only 66 percent of candidates with a bachelor's degree passed the exam on the first testing in 2009.
  1. Courses

    • Workshops to help registration-eligible individuals prepare for the Registered Dietitian Exam are offered by universities as well as private companies. Workshops may last several days and provide a comprehensive preparation for the Registered Dietitian Examination. Course fees generally include workshop registration and study materials. Online programs, such as Dietitian Exam, are also valuable in preparing for the exam.

    Materials

    • The most important study material is the "Study Guide for the Registration Examination for Dietitians," the most current of which is the eighth edition published in 2006. The book is available through the CDR as well as through workshops and book retailers. The University of Illinois recommends using "The Registration Examination for Dietitians Handbook for Candidates" as a study aid.

    Practice

    • Along with memorization and knowing the material, practice tests will help you understand what to expect on the exam and identify topics you need to study more. Practice tests and test questions are available online and via daily emails. The University of Illinois recommends taking advantage of practice tests and questions through DietitianExam.com, Breeding & Associates and RD Question of the Day through Test Prep Review.
