How to Improve TAKS Scores

Students in the Texas school system are required to pass a Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, or TAKS, test. The TAKS exam tests students' knowledge of English, math, science, reading and social studies. The test is first administered in the third grade and then again in the child's senior year of high school. Those who don't pass the exam are prevented from promotion to the next grade or graduating. There are steps that children can take to study for the exam and ensure they are adequately prepared for the test and score proficiently.

Obtain past TAKS test copies. Request copies of old TAKS test from the previous year. You can obtain old copies from the school's office or the superintendent's office of the school district in your area. Your child's teacher also can assist you in obtaining copies of past exams. Additionally, you may visit the Texas Education Agency website to obtain copies of released exams. Use the old exams to help the child review the key concepts and determine the child's weaknesses and strengths. Reviewing previous tests will help increase the child's score because he is familiarizing himself with concepts that will possibly be covered on the test he will take.

Obtain TAKS study guides. Visit the Texas Education Agency's website and download available TAKS study guides. Decide which subject guide the child should review. If the child requires assistance in all subjects, download guides pertaining to all available subjects. Allow the child to take the practice tests included in the study guide and time her as if it is the actual test. Continue to facilitate the practice exams with the child until she feels comfortable taking the tests at a timed pace and her score improves.

Enroll the child in TAKS tutoring. Speak to a school adviser and inquire about TAKS tutoring that is available in most Texas school districts. To help the child with subjects he struggles with the most, place him in tutoring. Expect the tutoring to occur after school hours and possibly on Saturdays in some school districts.
