How to Improve Standardized Test Scores in High School

Standardized tests record student performance compared to other students at the same grade level. Many states require annual standardized tests beginning in elementary school. Standardized tests are even more important for high school students who will take college preparatory standardized tests, such as the ACT or SAT. Standardized tests are very predictable, and applying a few strategies can raise your grade significantly.

Instructions

    • 1

Take practice tests. Practice tests resemble the real tests but are not officially graded. Taking a practice test familiarizes you with the topics and type of questions to expect on the standardized test. It also helps you learn how to fill in the answer key correctly, so you don't put your answers in the wrong row or column.

    • 2

Grade your practice test using the answer sheet and analyze your results. If you answered several questions in the same section incorrectly, focus on studying that skill or subject prior to taking the standardized test.

    • 3

Practice test-taking skills. Learn how to pace yourself to make sure you have time to answer all the questions. Skip questions you don't know and go back to them, so they don't prevent you from completing the questions you do know. Practice guessing answers you don't know by eliminating unlikely options. Most standardized tests don't penalize for wrong answers, so try to answer all questions even if you need to guess.

Sleep well the night before the test. Eat a good breakfast the morning of the test and take juice or a snack to have during a break; rest and energy improves your focus and accuracy.
