How to Recover Lost GED Documents

The General Educational Development (GED) test is designed by the American Council on Education and administered in hundreds of locations throughout the United States and in some overseas locations as well. Transcripts are not stored in a central location, and students who want to recover lost documents must contact the appropriate GED Test Administration Center. The American Council on Education maintains a database of all Test Administration Centers, and also retains records for military personnel and test-takers who took the GED while incarcerated.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your GED Testing Center (see Resources). If you took the test overseas, as a member of the U.S. military or while incarcerated, go directly to the GED Transcript Request Form (see Resources).

    • 2

Complete this form, print it out, and send it with the $14 fee (money order or credit card only, personal checks are not accepted) to: GED Testing Service, One Dupont Circle, Suite 250, Washington DC 20036-1193. You may also send your request by fax to (202) 296-8404 if you pay the fee by credit card.

    • 3

Contact your local GED Testing Center if you took the GED test in the United States and not as part of the military or incarcerated population (see Resources). Searching by zip code will give you local contact information.

    • 4

Request a transcript from your local GED Testing Center. Practices vary from state to state, but in many cases this is done through a division of the Department of Education in your state (see Resources). The State of Florida, for example, requires a $6 fee and a stamped self-addressed envelope.
