How to Prepare for the California Exit Exam

Starting in 2006, all California high school students need to pass the California High School Exit Examination, or CAHSEE, to receive a diploma. The test is based on two areas of core knowledge: English and math. Students first take the exam in 10th grade and have more opportunities to take it throughout high school. There are a few methods as well as study guides that can help students pass the test.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a free practice test offered by the California Department of Education to determine what areas you need to study for and improve. Take both the math and English practice tests and check your answers. See what areas you did well on, as well as which subjects you need to study more.

    • 2

Study the areas in which you need to improve. A tutor can help explain math and English principles, and offer study guides to help students better absorb the knowledge. Students can also study on their own using flash cards or taking detailed notes. The California Department of Education also offers study guides in both English and Spanish to help students prepare for the exam.

    • 3

Retake the practice exam. Go to the local library to find a book with past practice exams to get different questions. Some online services, such as the Study Guide Zone, offer practice tests you can purchase to better prepare for the test. Gauge your results and fine-tune which areas you need to improve and study those subjects.
