How to Prepare for the CSET Exam

The California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) is a credentialing exam that certifies instructors to work in California public schools. Credentials are given for single or multiple subject competence as well as education technology and bilingual authorization. Scores are based on scale of 100 to 300 with a 220 score the minimum requirement for passing the exam. Test-takers are not measured against other candidates, but against a standard of knowledge and skills related to the subject matter. Passing the test requires a commitment to reviewing subject material and referencing prior exams.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which credential you want to obtain. A single-subject teaching credential authorizes you to teach one subject, usually for grades 7 to 12. A multiple-subject credential allows you to teach all subjects from kindergarten to grade 12. An education specialist instruction credential lets you teach students with disabilities from kindergarten to grade 12.

    • 2

Visit the CSET website and review the general information about the CSET program to familiarize yourself with the examination.

    • 3

Click on the subject matter of the test you are taking to download a PDF that describes the subject matter requirement of the exam. The multiple-subject exam information is also available for review.

    • 4

Click on the test guide section to download actual sample test questions and responses from previous exams.

    • 5

Take a sample exam. Compare your answers to the responses to determine your weaker areas and the areas in which you need less study time.

    • 6

Purchase a CSET study guide from a bookstore or from an online retailer. Guides often contain several practice tests as well as test-taking strategies.

    • 7

Use the flashcard method to help you retain information. Write major concepts and theories on the front of a 3 x 5 card, and write the responses on the back. Review each card and learn the theory or concept. Ask a friend or colleague to test your knowledge by using the cards. Repeat the process until you master each card, then create new ones if necessary.
