How to Take the Praxis II for Additional Certifications

The Praxis series of tests are required for teacher certification or licensing in 45 states. The Praxis II tests cover over 120 topics including elementary and secondary education. Additional certifications can be obtained in content areas such as foreign languages and agriculture. To take and pass a Praxis II exam the test taker must register through the Praxis website and prepare extensively for the test prior to going on test day.

      Find the test for certification in the list of choices offered on the Praxis II test website. Many types of certifications will require multiple tests. For example, Physical Education has three different Praxis II tests available. Determine if you need to take all three tests prior to signing up. Your college counseling department will be able to tell you which tests are required in your area of study.

      Register for the test on the Praxis website. The website is listed in the resource section of this article. As of 2011 there is a $50 registration fee that applies once per year plus individual testing fees. Each test will cost between $65 and $140 depending on content area and if the test is administered by computer or on paper.

      Prepare for the test. Praxis offers study materials that can be purchased directly through their website and are created specifically for the topics that are tested. Purchase these materials and work the problems. Practicing answering sample problems will give you a better chance at passing the Praxis II test on test day.

      Print your admission ticket from the website. This ticket allows access to the testing facility. It is required for both computer and paper testing. ID will be verified by the testing staff. Appropriate IDs includes valid drivers license, passport, military ID or state issued ID cards. All IDs must include a picture, be signed and not be expired.
