Check the NJPASS report card for the student's year. Checking the student's grade is important, because every test has a different point scale. For example, the Language Arts test for first grade is out of 34 points, while the Language Arts test for third graders is out of 63 points.
Check the report card for the student's overall scores on the Math and Language Arts sections.
Download the NJPASS Elementary and High School Manuals on the Riverside Publishing website. Scroll down the webpage and click on both "Click Here to View for Technical Manual" links. Save the manuals, which are in PDF files, on your desktop to view them.
Open the Elementary or High School New Jersey Proficiency Assessment of State Standards -- Technical Manual document, and then compare the student's test scores with the scoring range chart. The scores will designate if the student is performing at a basic, proficient or advanced level.
Review the meaning of the scores. With an advanced rating, the student has shown strong expertise for Language Arts and Mathematics. With a proficient rating, the student has shown solid ability with Language Arts and Mathematics. Students who have scored a basic rating have showed a minimal amount of Language Arts and Mathematical expertise.
