How to Pass the Illinois Basic SkillsTest

Men and women who are launching a teaching career in Illinois must take and pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test. You must pass the test before you gain entrance into a teacher certification program. This multiple-choice test asks questions relating to language arts, reading and math and includes a writing section. You can take the test in person or online. The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and the Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) offer several resources that will help you pass the test.

      Familiarize yourself with the test. Download a copy of the Illinois Basic Skills Test framework from the ICTS website. The framework contains information regarding the test contents and topics.

      Take the diagnostic practice test. It's formatted the same way as the Illinois Basic Skills Test, covers the same subjects and includes a written section. Taking the practice test helps you determine which subjects require more of your study time. The test is available on the ICTS website.

      Use a study guide. The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) created the Basic Skills Test Preparation study guide. Access the study online through the Illinois Certification Testing System site.

      Take a free review course. There are courses that provide test candidates a review of the Illinois Basic Skills Test. Most colleges and universities in Illinois offer these courses. Speak with your college or university career counselor to find out if the course is available at your educational institution.

      Get a tutor who is familiar with the Illinois Basic Skills Test. A tutor will work with you one-on-one. He will provide you with study strategies and test-taking tips and help you improve in the subject areas that are challenging for you.
